Who we are...
We are a local group from the community that have come together to have some improvised fun! We come from a wide variety of backgrounds but all of us enjoy the opportunity to act like kids again, just be silly, and hopefully entertain a few people along the way.
What we do...
Improv U specializes in short form improvised comedy, that is created on the spot by using ideas from the audience. There is no script, so the actors have to create characters, locations, actions and dialogue based on audience suggestions. (We have even been known to pull volunteers from the audience to be part of our show!) If you like “Who’s Line Is It Anyway?,” you will love our shows even better because it’s LIVE!
Our History...Our Future
How it all began...
Our first experimental class started in January 2004 and culminated in a performance that March. It was an immediate hit with everyone! Imagine, an Improv show without having to travel to the big city!! Everyone had a great time, but who was going to teach the class again? After taking a few months hiatus, Improv U was back up and running under the direction of Venessa Sanchez, an original Improv U cast member. Classes started again in September of 2004 and have been going strong ever since!
Where we are now...
Celebrating 6 years of laughs!!!
Improv U has branched out as of September 2006, by providing both a basic Improvisation class as well an intermediate/advanced class called "next level" and is now looking for more players for our resident performance troupe!
During summer, ImprovU usually offer a week long improv class for grades 1-3 & another for grades 4-6. Watch for details!
Everyone that is involved in classes has the opportunity to perform or participate in our shows! That's right! Show off those skills you learned!
Our resident troupe "Twisted Gray Matter", is starting it's second year! TGM performs at the Front Row Theater as well as at outside venues!!
Keep an eye out for our postings of appearances!
What's on the horizon...
Our goal is to continue to provide fun and affordable improvisational classes and shows for our community and beyond. Currently classes are held at Dougherty Station in San Ramon, but there are changes on the Horizon and a new studio and black box theater is in the works! Watch for opportunities to help our dream come to life!
We look forward to seeing you at one of our shows or classes! After all, laughter IS the best medicine!
